Woven Roof: Housing for Baltimore

This project aims to emulate the relationship between sloped roofs and circulation within Piet Blom’s 1973 project, De Kasbah. Rather than treating these two conditions as separate elements, this project works to combine them – allowing the landscape of circulation to give form to the roofs of the units. Over the length of the site, the project builds its landscape above an open ground floor plan to its highest point at the north-facing side using a series of ramps, stairs, and accessible roofs/courtyard spaces. These courtyards provide connection between the different unit massings as well as provide public gathering spaces. Although the units do not have private terraces, these courtyards are readily accessible to every unit and are meant to serve as collective terraces.
